New Puppet Site – The Dummy Shoppe

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

TheBandrev

My webmaster, Steve Hurst, has done it again. Not only does he keep VentriloquistCentral.com up and running as well as many other websites, but he just finished a new one (actually he’s finished two, but more about that in a few days).

Our friends Steve & JET, makers of fine soft puppets from the Dummy Shoppe, hired Steve to build their website and it’s quite impressive.

Be sure to check it out:

http://www.thedummyshoppe.com

Even though I am a “hard figure” kind of guy, Steve & JET make high quality soft puppets.

Muppets are they Ventriloquist Figures ??

Monday, May 24th, 2010

For quite some time now there have been a deluge of Muppet puppets listed on eBay by a maker from the United States and then there are other soft figures with the listing of Ventriloquist in the title made in England and they list them by the hundreds. I have no problem with these being labeled as Muppets and or puppets but why do they use the word ventriloquist when in fact that is not what they are.

The Muppets in no way were ever used as a ventriloquist figure. The puppeteers were never visible and no one was ever seen throwing their voice. The characters all moved by way of a puppeteer and voices were all their own. Jim Henson was a wonderful puppeteer and he never ever used the words ventriloquist or ventriloquism when talking about his creations.

I really hate it to see so many listing which flood the ventriloquism pages of eBay when in fact they are not ventriloquist puppets. Just an observation by a ventriloquist figure collector!!

Ventriloquist Rey Ortega

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

rey-ortega-group

Here is some wonderful information that was sent into by Rey Ortega. I met Rey on Facebook after I had seen his video. I was blown away.

(If you’re not a fan of Ventriloquist Central and you are on Facebook, please become a fan. You can do so by clicking here)

Rey is a very talented ventriloquist and build his owns puppets and figures. He also has other talents as well. Here’s what Rey sent us:

I started ventriloquism at the age of five, Paul Winchell was my hero. I began performing professionally at 13 and was the first ventriloquist to appear on Chuck Barris’ The Gong Show.

I was hired at age 15 to do the TV pilot. Currently I perform with my wife Kiyomi in The Wisdom Tree Native American Storytelling Program which we began 11 years ago. We perform at Elementary schools throughout CA.

Kiyomi is the storyteller, I play Native American Flutes, Dance the Pueblo Hoop Dance, and perform with six different Vent figures, five of which I built myself. My oldest figure is JC, custom built for me by Jack Coates in 1973. He still looks great!

I build re-creations of Mayan and Aztec ceremonial clay flutes and perform along the Mayan Caribbean during the summer. I make and play the bamboo flute and have 3 self produced CDS of my music.

Last, I’ve recently began performing my Vent act for corporate events and aiming toward cruise ships. My new website is up, but still under construction. It should be complete by the end of the week, www.reyortegaentertainment.com

The Wisdom Tree website is www.wisdomtreestudios.com
