Ventriloquist Central Presents - An Interview with Terry Fator

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

The big surprise is here. Last night (Wednesday) Val Hilliker, her daughter Julie and Lee Dunn (working the camera) met with Terry Fator before his performance at the Funny Bone in Newport, KY. He was kind enough to do an interview specifically for Ventriloquist Central.

Val, who has been a contributor to the website, conducted the interview on behalf of Ventriloquist Central. This is a great interview geared towards the art of ventriloquism.

We will post more videos later….but for now, enjoy the interview.

David Erskine & Ronny Darnay

DavidErskineandRonnyDarnay

Last week David Erskine and Ronny Darnay talked about the Good News with children at a Vacation Bible School in Fort Worth, TX. Ronny observed that the material never changes but Erskine does. One question he asked was: “Erskine, when you were my age, did you have hair?” Jeff Dunham crafted this Ronny Darnay head in 1984 as a copy of his famous McElroy figure, Ollie. Erskine painted it and made the body and hands. Later Ray Guyll repainted it. Ronny’s story is included in Greg Claassen’s singular book McElroy Magic! Building a Replica.

David Erskine and Ronny Darnay have been together since 1955, junior high school. That year Paul Winchell offered his book Ventriloquism for Fun and Profit on his Saturday morning children’s TV show, Winchell and Mahoney Show. Erskine saved money for bus fare and the purchase of the book, rode the bus downtown to Barber’s Book Store, bought the book and read it “before he returned home” and has been doing it ever since. Winchell included information about W.S. Berger and his Vent Haven in Fort Mitchell, KY, and the International Brotherhood of Ventriloquists. Mr. Berger published a magazine, The Oracle, which featured vents from around the world. Receiving the heavy paper, typeset magazine was a special event because there were no vent conventions. The Ed Sullivan Show and other TV variety shows featured the greatest vents.

Erskine wrote Mr. Berger asking about membership in the I.B.V. and in his college years began a friendship that included overnight visits with Mr. Berger and his wife, Muzz. There Erskine saw McElroy figures and was fascinated by them. Mr. Berger was happy to tell him George and Glenn McElroy stories.

Erskine created several versions of Ronny Darnay. The first was papier-mâché and one was purchased … Frank Marshall wasn’t answering Mr. Berger’s letters and he didn’t answer Erskine’s. Neither did George McElroy.

Several years after Mr. Berger died, a newly formed Vent Haven advisory board sent letters announcing a convention to people on Mr. Berger’s mailing list. The list of special guests included George and Glenn McElroy — there was the reason for Erskine to attend. When George saw Erskine’s name tag he said with a smile, “I’m going to answer your letter!” During the years other lasting friendships developed. Visiting people like George and Glenn was always a special time.

In the middle ’80s, Erskine self-published books of interviews with vents and annually had a dealer’s table where he sold them and also offered for sale vent collectibles.

Soon Erskine will offer the remaining interview books here. Also, other self-published vent works will be offered. Ronny says, “He has to find them first.”

Thanks David for sending this to share with everyone.

A Ventriloquist BLAST….From the PAST

Friday, June 20th, 2008

I found this picture and story in the Sept-Oct 1956 issue of The Oracle. It’s about Lee Dean (attorney in Harrodsburg, KY), a regular contributor to Ventriloquist Central.

At a very early age he was “doing his part”. Way to go, Lee.

After I posted this….Lee Dean sent in this information:

“Thanks for the 1956 Sept/Oct Oracle picture. I got nostalgic and looked up my name on the 1956 children’s crusade, and there I was–except they got the girl as the king and me as the queen of that shindig.”

Guest Blog - Puppet Rights Issue

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Ventriloquist Tom Crowl wrote to me asking if I could help him out by letting the audience of Ventriloquist Central know of a performance concern he is encountering. So instead of answering him directly I decided to post his question to me here on my blog as a guest.

Dan,

I’m hoping you will find this an interesting topic to post on Ventriloquist Central.

I’ve decided to create a souvenir video DVD to sell following shows. Because I knew Jeff Dunham had rebuilt characters to avoid issues, I thought I should probably obtain permission from the puppet makers before doing anything. I figured at my level - I’d get a - “You bought it, you can use it, give us a credit and good luck!” answer.

I contacted the puppet makers of the characters I wanted to use and they all came back with a go-ahead, except for one. That one replied with a media rights usage fee. I was surprised to say the least. While it wasn’t that much, I still decided I would pass and drop the puppet out of my show, advertising and web site. Before I made a hasty decision, I wanted to see how others felt.

I started a discussion at the Magic cafe:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewforum.php?forum=182&2561

I’ve been surprised by the response. Performers all naturally felt we should have unlimited performance rights. I contacted the maker of every figure I own to get their opinion - everyone else said go ahead. I’ve heard from makers I’ve never purchased from and they gave me their opinion on performance rights. Clinton even posted a fairly strong argument at his blog in favor of performer rights. So now this one company stands alone.

I’m not sure that most people even consider rights when purchasing a puppet or figure. I feel this is an important and interesting topic to discuss. I’d appreciate your help calling attention to the matter.

Thanks,

Tom Crowl

Going to the Ventriloquist Convention ?!?

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

high-gas-prices

I have been having conversations with quite a number of people concerning the Vent Haven Ventriloquist Convention and how expensive it will be to attend this year. With the price increase of gasoline and jet fuel the costs have sky rocketed over the costs of previous years.

With this in mind my Webmaster Steve and I decided to run another pole and see what everyone thinks about going this year so look at the top of the right hand side column and give us your vote on this very important poll.
