It's April and spring has sprung.  I just can’t get enough is the thought that keeps creeping into my conscious and sub conscious mind. I pose it this way when I am awake and not working my thoughts are about ventriloquist figures, which one will I find today, how shall I arrange the newest addition into the fold or how will I dress him? If my mind isn’t thinking these things I find I am thinking about baseball.

You see I live in Boston and for us Bostonians there is a thing called Red Sox Nation and for me from the month of April until October I can think of nothing better than watching the Sox play. Luckily I love the sport which offers the most in games. Hey these guys play 160 plus games per year. I really love it when they win but I love the game even more and so even if the boys lose I really don’t care. Baseball it is just the best game. The national pastime. That which keeps us young.

Oh yes I was talking about ventriloquist figures...where is THIS figure???  Here is a great ad for the Revello Petee Sailor Boy ventriloquist figure. I have shown you this picture because the figure in this ad eludes me at present.

It is with great pleasure that I tell you this news.  Bill Nelson has been a figure maker for decades and his figures are present in many collections today, not just ventriloquists, but doll collectors too. Each figure is totally unique and simply incredible. Bill has teamed up with mechanic and figure builder Dan Lavender and they are producing some of the finest ventriloquist figures out there.

It is with great pleasure that I can announce to the ventriloquist community that James Manalli is now carving basswood ventriloquist figures and is in fact taking orders. His very first figure he decided he wanted to become part of the Ventriloquist Central Collection and I am happy to share pictures of him with you.

This is a truly one of a kind figure which was made and used by our good friend Bob Isaacson. I did say made by Bob but there were other hands involved. The head casting with unfinished face was done by John Arvites , the mechanics were done by Alan Semok and then the finish carving of this great face ,the painting, wigging and body was done by Mr Isaacson.

I am a lover of Ken Spencer's figures because they show so much character. Now I am not talking realism I mean character as in cartoon. If you look at the figures offered by Ken Spencer in his little brochure this guy was called Oley.

Frank Marshall did quite a lot of work for commercials and this figure was undoubtedly for one of them. It is quite possibly one of the last figures he carved because he didn’t quite finish him. ( A work in progress)

This Marshall figure was rescued from a damp basement where he had been lost for about 65 years. When I purchased him every time I touched him another piece fell apart. I sent him off to Ray Guyll for a complete restoration. The results were utterly remarkable. He is without question one of the finest examples of Frank Marshall’s work from the 1930′s.

Final Thoughts


We have talked many times about the Ventriloquist Central Collection because when we first started Ventriloquist Central I wanted to promote the collection but with the help of my partner/webmaster Steve Hurst Ventriloquist Central has become the largest web site on the Internet solely devoted to all aspects of ventriloquism both old and new.

Another thing happened as we have grown over the past five years and that is that Steve has become webmaster for quite a number of people in the ventriloquial world (as I write this I know he’s working on three other ventriloquists’ sites right now…..plus if you saw yesterday’s blog about Mike Palma’s new site, Ventriloquist Workshop, Steve did that one too).

He is a master in marketing and web site creation, plus with his help a web site done especially for you can bring more than what you could ever believe. Case in point is what has happened to Ventriloquist Central. We never expected that it would become like a second job for the two of us and grow so big.

That being said with Steve as your webmaster he does the market research for you and your site, which causes your site to be found much more quickly on Internet searches than you would ever be able to do on your own. He is privy to all the latest knowledge and tools needed to keep your web site top on the list.

So I guess what I am trying to say and do is promote my good friend, my partner and my webmaster Steve. If you are a performing ventriloquist (or any other business for that matter) then you need a web site and Steve is the one you need behind you.
